March's New Products & First Impressions

 photo march_zpsui9cdtof.jpg

I decided to switch things up. Instead of doing a haul and empty post together, I am going to do each separately (and I am waiting until I build up a full bag of empties). So now, when I do a new product "haul" at the end of the month it will also include more thoughts about each products and my first impressions of them!

This month I had a lot of coupons and perks saved up from different places. I also ran out of a couple of things that I needed to replace and exchanged a not so good concealer for a better one. Also, a threw in a couple of products from last month so I could give you my first impression thoughts. Keep reading for all the details.

Smashbox 'Photo Finish' Primer Water
(bought last month)
I have been using this when I really want my makeup to look good and last. After spritzing evenly over my face and letting it dry, I get a clean/fresh base to add my POREfessional to. I really have noticed a difference in the oiliness of my skin throughout the day when I use this stuff.

Sephora Gradual Self-Tanning Face Water
You all know by now that I self tan, but in between applications my face always loses its color (thanks to lots of exfoliation and cleansing). I had been using a gradual face tanning lotion to help keep my glow, but that always felt too heavy. This stuff is light and still hydrates and works to help keep a subtle glow going at all times.

Discover | Pin Up Curls

 photo PinupCulrs_zpsnvqscai4.jpg

Time for another "Discover" post. This week I am featuring my favorite salon Pin Up Curls and their gorg owner - Erin!

(Yup, it isn't Saturday, but we are discovering anyway)

First things first, introduce yourself!! What drew you into hair styling? Did you always know that is what you wanted to do ?
My name is Erin Raber, and I am the owner and a stylist at Pin-Up Curls Salon. I’ve always loved doing hair and make-up. I started playing with make-up at the age of three. (Thanks mom for being my mannequin!! ) I was that girl that always had make over slumber parties. I really always wanted to be a hair dresser but like most of us it was frowned upon. My parents encouraged college first. I went to college for three years, had lots of fun, but ended up without a degree. Years passed, I got married, worked “jobs” and finally had a baby. When you are responsible for someone else’s life, things have to change! I did what was right for me and my family, and with my husband’s support, I went to beauty school at the age of 24. Best decision ever!

So the salon, any story behind the name or the style/theme of the d├ęcor?
I’m all about “does it feel right.”  I love old and new, classic and warm. I liked the name Pin-Ups first but a friend of mine suggested Pin-Up Curls and I fell in love!  I thought the name was a perfect blend of old, new and a little bit quirky just like us, “the Curls.”

My baby turned one!

 photo IMG_20150329_191440_zpsvsylrowe.jpg

Let's recap shall we?

Friday's work day ended with drinks and a couple of appetizers as the new Wine Down place here in town. Seriously if you are in Fort Wayne make it there at some point. I had BBQ Bison Meatballs and they were so, so good. The wine was lovely too! Then I drove home and Nate and I headed out to dinner (sometimes you just really need a date night). Flat Top was the winning location and we both got super spicy bowls topped with all sorts of fun things. We called it a night early and just talked about our week.

Started the day off bright and early at Church for my last class to become a Lutheran. What feels like seven years later, I am finally a member. Then I headed out with the girls to see my friend try on her dress. That ended and it was nap time for me. My nap was followed by a trip to the grocery store with the girls, then prepping food for later that night. Did anyone else watch the unfortunate ending of the Kentucky - Notre Dame game? My Dad and many other people I care about were heartbroken to see Notre Dame be so close and lose. I was heartbroken to see UK win. Oh well, Go Wisconsin now! (For the record, I am not a bandwagon fan. I simply don't have my team to cheer for so now I am cheering for anyone playing UK.)

Friday's Favorites | March 27

It is Friday people! Hooray! Here are all my favorite things from this week.

"When you move closer to me..." texts/snaps

Things like: "When you move close to me you have to come to Zumba with me on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday." (You know who you are.) These have definitely kept me positive and looking forward to our move. Knowing that my friends and already thinking about us hanging out once we move is a comforting thought.

Sephora Gradual Self-Tan Face Water

Since I am back to regular self tanning applications I have to keep my face matching the rest of my body throughout all my exfoliation and washing. This stuff is great, I have been using it every day (on a flat cotton round) and rubbing it on my face and neck to keep everything even. Best part is it is hydrating as well so no more heavy lotions to try and get my glow!

Battle of the Fiber Lash Extensions

 photo FiberLashExtensionstitle_zpscuyuwyy1.jpg

Lashes. They are always one of my most time consuming in my beauty routine. Whether I am trying to build up my natural lashes or adding a pair of falsies for some extra length and volume, they are just a pain. In the fight against short/thin lashes, Younique took the beauty world by storm recently. It seemed like every 6th girl I knew was using it or selling it, and at $30 I really wasn't all that excited about it. That being said, one of the ladies that I knew that used it happened to be one of my best friends and she let me try her's when she visited. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. I was picking off little flecks of broken fibers from my skin all night, and although I saw improvement in my length it didn't match my falsies. Obviously, I didn't buy any and I moved on with life.

Then I started noticing other brands starting to promote their own fiber lash kits. I was intrigued yet again and picked up two brands: Tarte and Physicians Formula. The Physicians Formula Eye Booster one I had heard about through a YouTube video (here) and the Tarte Best in Faux I just stumbled upon, waiting in line at Ulta (that's where they get ya!).

On to the comparison!

Let It Rain

 photo unsplash_524000a90aaad_1_zpsdqixdkl4.jpg
[original image source]

Seriously though, I have never been so excited at the thought of rain or a thunderstorm in my life. It just makes it seem like spring is finally coming around. Keep it coming mother nature, keep it coming.

Although it has nothing to do with today's post, I have had this song stuck in my head ever since I titled this post. Not mad about it either. Lately little things have sparked songs that touch my heart and make me feel like everything is happening for a reason.

And on to today's actual post. With the impeding rain in the weather forecast all of the rain things are looking so good to me. I have a camping style raincoat, but a cute one wouldn't hurt. I have an umbrella that is on it's last leg, and I haven't owned rain boots since my sophomore year of college. Obviously I need to go shopping right? If I were to go shop right now, here is what I would be choosing between.

But Why?

But why?

This is s a question I find myself asking all the time. Like yesterday when I walked out of work to three inches of snow on my car. Or Saturday morning when the dog decided eight o'clock was late enough and it is time for everyone to be up.

But why?

We could question everything, but we would never get anywhere. Dwelling on things of the past do not let us move forward into the future. I am guilty of dwelling on things. As much as I try there are just a few things from the past that I can't stop thinking about. Like the time I completely freaked out during sand volleyball when I rolled my ankle (I looked ridiculous). One of the things I have held on to for a while now is something that one of my professors said to me during a class in college.

I remember it so clearly, I was in the journalism building for an evening class taught by an adjunct professor with three other students (all older than me). We were working on an interactive media project as a team and the focus was on Franklin, IN and I was supposed to be focusing on flood damage. What I don't remember is why the next conversation took place. All I hold on to is that it ended in my professor telling me,

"No one cares about what you want to say (write)"

But why?

Early Nights

Well, that picture is crazy blurry, but I am obsessed with how white/silver my hair looks! That is about how the whole weekend went though when it comes to pictures, so my apologies in advance. Onward to the weekend wrap-up!

After work I headed home to see Nate and then we headed out to his parents' house to see his sister, who was in from San Diego. The evening was spent hanging out with family and it was great.

This was a no alarm type of morning, but my dog had other ideas. I headed out to do some shopping in the late morning and Nate worked on tearing furniture apart and packing some boxes. He honestly got more accomplished Saturday morning than I did all week probably. After lunch and a little basketball, I slowly started getting ready and we headed out later that evening. It was the earliest we had ever been to this bar (we went for a birthday party) and also the earliest we have ever left. It was nice though.

It was so nice to dress up and have a night out with him, even if it was an early one.

We headed to Church, where pastor happily reminded me that I have my last class coming up on Saturday to become a member of the Church (finally!). This has been a long process but I am so glad it is almost done and I will be a member of the Church I have been going to for the past two years. After church we headed home and Nate packed up again. Then I was off to a baby shower for his sister and he swung by to say bye and headed back south to get ready for another week of work. I will be so glad when this move is over, that is for sure. The baby shower was so cute and I was glad I was able to make it.

What did you do this weekend?

Completely unrelated question, is anyone else sucked into The Royals on E?

Friday's Favorites | March 20

The weekend is almost upon us! It is Friday my loves and that means favorites time. One thing that will not be on my favorites list is the weather currently - I mean there is frost on the ground this morning. No thanks. On to the list of true favorite things!

Weekends were already my favorite part of the week, but now they are even more awesome. Friday means I get to see my husband again. I know there are people out there that go longer than five days at a time without seeing their significant other (like my SIL), but I still don't like it. So yay for Friday and seeing Nate!

My Sister

From her random sassy texts about other people to the daily snapchats of her life, She makes me laugh and is one of my favorite people in this entire world. Lately she has just really been making life a little more happy. Love you Mads!

Mermaid Moment

 photo EmilyKai_zpsb6vxxkeh.jpg

Morning lovelies! If you follow me on Instagram you have seen a sneak peak at this look today. If not, you should and you would be ahead of the game. But here were the sneak previews in case you missed it.

Onward to the look! For both of these looks I used a headband from Emily Kai (see the Discover post here). Aren't they gorgeous headbands?

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. I received the headbands c/o Emily Kai for reviewing purposes, but all thoughts and opinions are 100% my own honest thoughts.

These are definitely investment headbands, but the quality is great and they look so unique. Plus you are supporting local and that is always a plus. The packaging is also gorgeous and that is always a win for me. Now I have this perfect little box to hold headbands when I travel or other jewelry. Score!

Let's move on to the look and see how I styled both of these, shall we?

I Dream of Spring

Seriously, the weather on Monday was such a tease! I don't know if it ever quite hit 70, but it got so close and it felt spectacular. Then it went away and we are back to the 40's. Still good, but I could have kept the warmer weather and been happy. Anyway, that split second of warmer temperatures got me really excited for spring and the changes that will take place in my wardrobe because of it. I see a lot of pastels and occasional pops of bold, bright colors and floral prints in my future. Now to keep my desire for shopping at bay, a little window shopping is in order.

Whack for My Daddy-O, There's Whiskey in the Jar

 photo 3_zpspythy9u4.jpg
Ireland Countryside
In case you are starting this post with no clue what song I am referring to in the title, here you go.

Anyway, HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY! Drink a beer or something, and wear green to save yourself. I myself am going to have a Smithwick's and dream about being back in Ireland. Where I had my first Guinness, first taste of Jameson and got to see some pretty amazing places. Pictures of these things below. I tried to find my journal from this trip and do a whole throwback recap of it, but I couldn't find it. Another day then.

With Warmer Weather

Oh, hi everyone. Sorry this is later than normal, I have been sick all weekend and it caught up with me. Of course as soon as the weather warms up, here comes the cold. Nate said I can blame it on running outside without enough layers on still. Anyway, on to the weekend we go!

Let's see...Friday night Nate came home for the weekend and after a really long hug I made dinner. General Tso's for the win! Chinese always wins my stomach's love, and his too! Up next being lazy and talking about our weeks, followed by some movies.

We had adult things to do, like sign away our lives for our new mortgage. By the end of it, my signature had changed probably 20 times. We are all set though! On to the next step of the moving process - packing. We officially packed up 11 boxes and only had one incident so far. Luckily it was a $15 vase from TJ Maxx that broke, and not something with crazy sentimental value. Lesson learned: if anything could possibly break in that box write FRAGILE on it as soon as you close it.

 photo 20150314_165240_zpsvabryz68.jpg
You can crash my selfie anytime.

This was the first of two days of picture taking for Nate, and he was just thrilled. But I loved how the look came out and I can't wait to share it with you all.
That evening was spent with our family celebrating a cousin's birthday and just catching up with everyone. We ended the night with more movies - of course.

After church. it was home for left overs before working on laundry (me) and homework (him). We also shot a few pictures of a second look for a post later this week. Then we watched bit of TV and he was off back to Indy for work. I surprised myself by lacing up my sneakers and taking the dog out for a quick mile run, and then started in on a friend's wedding invitations again.

And just like that the weekend was gone. This week looks like more packing, running outside and design work. Hooray for staying busy!

What do you have planned for the week?

Friday's Favorites | March 13

Another week bites the dust. I don't know about you but Friday couldn't come soon enough! Here are the things that made me grin (and one grimace) this week.

This BuzzFeed List - 22 Signs You Were Raised in the MidWest

#5 & #6 were daily life
#7 was my childhood (always, always outside)
#9 shows that #basic started here, we have good leaves - that means good pictures.
#10 Yup, you are looking at a tornado position expert right here. Once we had to stay that way in a locker room after a basketball game for close to an hour!
#13 yes, puppy chow (not muddy buddies...)
#15 probably the only thing I really miss from high school
#18-#22 just yes. All of it.

This Cinnamon Roll

Yup, this happened, and it was delicious.

This Yoga Channel

I have made a conscious effort to really step up my yoga game and this is how I am doing it. I love her channel and the 30 Days of Yoga challenge/series is perfect for getting into that routine.

Essential Oils, the Beginning Thoughts

Earlier this week I talked about supplements, which ones I take, and the ones I am looking into. However, I also feel like I need to bring up essential oils and their benefits/uses too because lately it seems they are everywhere. Currently, I am not using them on a daily basis, but I have been really interested in them and have started doing my research.

So far I have lemon and peppermint, but I am interested in more than that.

Tea Tree Oil
Uses: Skin problems like acne and fungus
I have a face wash that has tea tree oil in it already, but I am interested in seeing how the straight oil itself can be used.

Uses: Relaxing, help with bruises/cuts/skin irritation, reduce stress
Although I don't have this in oil form, I make sure to have lavender scents throughout my house (especially in our bedroom) to help me relax. My goal is to have a oil diffuser in our next house and let the aroma fill the room before bed.

InstaNatural Lemon Essential Oil (c/o)
Uses: Detox, acne, boost alertness, increasing focus/concentration, repel fleas on pets.
Again, I would love to see how this works with acne. Even better is the use for fleas! This is one of the oils that I have currently (thanks to BrandBacker and InstaNatural) so I will be playing around with it.

A Pinch of Green

I am not the biggest, deck me out in luck of the Irish kind of person. So when St. Patrick's Day rolls around you will likely see me in neutrals with just a hint of green (shoes, jewelry, scarf). Not because I don't like green, but just because I would rather not be another green all over person.

However, looking at my most recent keeps you would think that I only wear black, white, grey and tan/nude. It is starting to be a problem. That being said, here are my most recent lusts in the shoe and accessory department.

See, nude and tan everywhere. I did throw in  some really great color too. These Valentino "Rockstuds" are to die for! I am also obsessed with these floral Birkenstocks and the fringed high heels.

Let me start out by giving my disclaimer. I am not a doctor, and I am not saying you should take these supplements. Like with my day two hair tutorial, I am always so interested in what other people do to keep their body and skin in tip, top shape. These are the supplements I take to keep my body going strong. You should consult with your doctor before starting anything and really do your research about how a certain supplement will affect you before starting something new.

Okay, so like I said these are the supplements I take to keep my body going strong. I am not perfect and I do not always take them every day, but I try my hardest. Here is what I take and why, as well as some new supplements I am looking into getting.

Evening Primrose Oil

I began to take this supplement because of research done by my Momma. I have slight eczema and it has been considered one of the best remedies to ease not only eczema but other skin issues as well.

This is a pretty standard one. Biotin is supposed to help with hair and nail growth/strength and I have taken it since I was a sophomore in college probably (I honestly don't remember, but it has been a while). I notice the most difference in my nails when I take it continuously. They grow much faster and stronger. My hair grows decently fast anyway, but I am always game for something with an extra boost.

Before Every Rainbow there is Rain

Kind of a gloomy title I guess, but it is life right now. Let's just jump right in to the life update shall we?

I had my last Komet game (because of our move) and I was heading there a bit early. Apparently I am a magnet for terrible drivers though because someone backed into my car at a stoplight. Long story short he was oblivious to the world and almost drove off like nothing happened. Luckily I am a drama queen and made a slight scene so he asked me if I wanted to pull off up in one of the parking lots and we did to double check that there was no damage. Lucky for him, he managed to only hit me with his tire. Still not sure how, but that was better than having a real wreck.

Life went on and I headed to my last hockey game, where I managed to finish the season without falling on the ice! I count that as a major win.

This was the first Saturday that Nate and I had absolutely no plans set. It felt awesome! We ended up heading to his parents during the afternoon then had friends over for dinner that night. Apparently my enchilada game was on point, because everyone was complimenting my cooking. Ego boost for sure, thanks guys!

Discover | Emily Kai

 photo EmilyKai_zpshlv5smee.jpg

Alright everyone, we are back with another new and fun company run by a Fort Wayne lady. I love finding these local small businesses and sharing them with you. Today is all about Emily Kai and the beautiful hair wraps, headbands and now bracelets that are available!

First things first, introduce yourself!
I'm originally from Angola, IN and grew up on a farm. I and now live in Fort Wayne, IN and have an amazing family with one son, Kai (2 years old) and a second son on the way. I have 2 dogs- Duke (Golden retriever) and Ellie (Sheltie).

What drew you into the headband business initially?
I've always loved headbands and have never found one I'm satisfied with. I didn't go to a fabric market with intentions to create a business, I simply was looking at fabrics to make some blankets. I found a fabric I fell in love with (Rainforest Lush) and new it was the perfect look for a headband- exotic and colorful and that fabric started my first Kai Band. That same day, I sought out a seamstress to make some for me and my designs began. I never realized how such a simple product as a headband could take so long to get just right! I decided to do more... I had always tied scarves in my hair, but without elasticity in them my hair would go flat and they would slip out. I love the side-tie, Audrey Hepburn look! That evolved into my "Kai Tie" design with long straps. That took over a year before I was fully satisfied with the design.

So the name, Emily Kai, where did that come from?
Emily is my name, Kai is my son's name. When I started designing headbands I was on maternity leave with my son, Kai and he was in an infant carrier against me as I was going through fabric markets, cutting out, pinning together ideas and trying them on as they were made. I spend 14 hour days doing nothing but fine tuning the initial designs, which was the Kai Band and original Kai Tie with long straps and alternating with nursing Kai.

 photo Mediterranean_Mermai_zpssodt09yz.jpg

You have expanded past just headbands now, anything else in the future?
We have expanded our fabric headband collection to many designs including a short version of the Kai tie, a turban type knot headband and a tied up headband. We have also began a beaded headband line that features genuine stones, crystals and backed with butter-soft leather. Outside of headbands, we also have scarves and a jewelry collection that is very earthy and features genuine stones.

 photo Blue_Wrap_1.jpg_zpsfcfqpuva.png

Do you have a favorite item?
That's tough. Depends on the occasion. I love the fabric headbands for everyday wear- they stay put even when I'm moving around chasing my little one and living the busy everyday life as a Mother. They are super comfortable and many feature bamboo fibers in the fabric, which are the first headbands with this luxury. Many headbands on the market are made from silk jersey, which are stretchy but slip and make you sweat more. I also love the quality and simplicity of our beaded line for a more classy occasion.

 photo IMG_1016.jpg_zpskg7ty0qt.png

Where do you see yourself and the company going in the next 5 years?
I go with the flow. I don't have any strategic plans or itineraries. I listen to my stores and individual customers and jump on opportunities or ideas they present with. I love to design, create and see those ideas come to life. It's a passion and we've been blessed to have the opportunity to grow and expand as quickly as we have.

Show her some love! Here is where you can find Emily Kai.

Like what you see? I snagged my Emily Kai through Amy Minnich, and you can too! Here is how to order:
